It was probably a free item
handed out to customers as an advertisement for the store. The
pages are designed to be torn off at the end of each month. The
last page ripped off this calendar is August 1882. The calendar
was given to the museum by Mrs. Gridley Clement in 1974.
Henry Fox arrived in
Healdsburg “from the East” shortly before 1878 when he became
the partner of Thomas Riley in his drugstore on the Plaza. Not
long after this, Riley retired, and Henry Fox became the sole
proprietor of the drug store. He also acted as Postmaster in
Healdsburg for several years. In 1890 Fox sold the drug store to
Mr. W.H. Baxter of San Francisco, however he continued to remain
active in the Healdsburg community. In 1899, he opened a
“Twentieth Century Novelty Store” that sold new products, and in
1906 along with Julius Myron Alexander patented a writing device
known as the “ruling pen”. Fox is said to have been quite a
businessman, and “accumulated considerable property” in the
Healdsburg vicinity, including the building occupied by his
drugstore. He even constructed a Play House, known as “Fox
Hall”, at the back of the Masonic block on West Street
(Healdsburg Avenue).
