| Artifact Of The Month - November 2007 |

This month's
artifact is a "dance card" that was used by an unknown young lady in
Healdsburg between approximately 1898-1905. The dance card is not
accessioned and it was found in the collection. We have no
information about its donation. The hole at the top of the 3 1/2
inch cardboard dance card is where a tiny pencil on a string would
have been attached. This card shows dances that were fashionable in
the U.S. in 1900. Before the start of the dance event, a man could
reserve a dance with the lady(ies) of his choice by asking to sign
her dance card. |

The gala commemorated on this card was hosted by
the genial Quimby ("Quim") Sewell, a popular local
baseball player and saloon proprietor. It was
held at Fox's Hall, built in 1898 on the west side
of West Street (Healdsburg Avenue), between Plaza
and North streets. Quim Sewell and Fox's Hall are
pictured here in approximately 1904.
