Most archaeologists agree
that Healdsburg sits atop village sites up to 12,000 years old. In the more
recent past, the Healdsburg area and Dry Creek Valley were occupied by
Southern Pomo speakers.
A Southern Pomo Woman
The Alexander Valley was inhabited by Wappo-speaking peoples who were
culturally very similar to the Southern Pomo, despite their linguistic differences.
Both groups are particularly known for their beautiful and varied baskets.
For more detailed information on the original inhabitants
of the Healdsburg area, see the History Overview.
Artifacts
The Healdsburg Museum has a diverse collection of local
basketry and stone tools. A permanent display in the Museum gallery is
devoted to Southern Pomo and Western Wappo history and culture, with many
examples of baskets on display.
