The Healdsburg Museum research archives contain many useful sources for researching the history of grape growing and winemaking in northern Sonoma County.

General Information

The Museum subject files include references on “Wineries,” “Cooperage,” and “Planting and Production.” The subject files also contain numerous articles about phylloxera and Prohibition.

Articles

Our newspaper index contains references to articles about planting of vines, production of wine, construction and expansion of area wineries, and profiles of local winemakers. The newspapers containing the articles are available on microfilm in the Museum archives.

Personal Stories

The Museum’s oral history collection contains interviews with local wine industry pioneers, including Robert Young, Joe Vercelli and Steve Thomas. Most of the interviews have been at least partially transcribed.

Photographs

The photograph collection contains interior and exterior photos of many northern Sonoma County wineries, such as Simi Winery, Chambaud Winery, Italian Swiss Colony, Paxton Winery, and Soda Rock Winery. Copies of photographs may be ordered from the Museum.

Documents

The Museum’s document collection contains some winery account books and specific records. City Tax Assessment records, dating back to the 1870s, cover properties within the Healdsburg city limits. The tax records record the specific location of various historic wineries and the amount of wine produced each year.

Maps

Sanborn maps for the years 1888, 1893, 1898, 1911, and 1950, are available at the Museum. These color-coded maps show the location and construction details of wineries formerly located within the Healdsburg city limits.

Other Resources

Additional sources for Sonoma County wine history can be found at the Sonoma County Wine Library, housed at the Healdsburg Branch of the Sonoma County Regional Library System, located at the intersection of Piper and Center streets. Especially valuable are the wine reference files, published oral history interviews and online catalog of historical sources from wine historian Charles Sullivan. For more information, visit the Healdsburg Library, consult the website at http://www.sonoma.lib.ca.usw/wine.html or call librarian Bo Simons at (707) 433-3772.
