| Description |
The Beedle family truck loaded with tanbark cut from Effie Meeker's ranch southwest of Occidental. Left to right, Richard Sonoma Beedle, Carl Beedle, Mack McCandless and Earl Beedle. The Beedle Ranch was about a mile west of Occidental on Coleman Valley Road. The Tanbark was cut in the Spring of the year when the sap was running and made peeling easy. Cut in four foot lengths, the bark was dried in the woods and hauled out in the fall, usually paid for by the ton. Considerable shrinkage took place in the drying process. If the bark lay in the woods till the rainy season, it lost some of the tannin by leaching action. The Chestnut or Tanoak tree (Lithocarpus densiflores) had the highest tannin content of any of the coastal hardwoods. |
