Description Yurok Woman's Fancy Basketry Hat

Dimensions: Diameter is 7 inches at the rim.
Condition: Excellent.
Estimated Date of Origin: 1920.
Description: This is a three-color hat from the Klamath River area of California. It is hemispherical with banded designs in three registers. The principal design color is yellow bear grass on a dull brown field of conifer root. Highlight bands are seen in black and red. These are maidenhair fern stems (black) and the root of the Woodwardia chain fern that is dyed with red sap from the alder tree. The designs are in half-twist overlay on a field of plain-twined weft.
