Rick'ys Big Collection Hendricks
Date 1845-1860
Description Dress worn by Sarah Hendricks over the plains (several times) to California between 1852 and 1865.
Beige Shaded floral background roller print with two shades of pink/red teardrops outlined in dark brown.
Dress has sloped shoulders and gathered dropped long sleeves with cuffs at the wrists. Waist line is round with a self band of fabric between bodice and shirt. Skirt is very full with tight gathers. Front has high rounded neck, buttons to waist, hocks at waist band and is slit part way into skirt.

Lining is of fabric. Bodice back is lined with a beige and brown floral trail. Bodice front is lined with four different fabrics, browns and beige with some pink motifs.

This dress has been altered, maybe more than once. The buttons on the bodice front as well as the hooks and eyes are 20th century. There are varying threads used in places that have been altered. There is machine stitching on the bodice on one back seam. Pleats may have been cartridge pleats originally judging from the closeness in some parts of the skirt.

Condition of the dress is poor. Excessive and uneven fading, pink and red fading faster than the brown. Bodice is very fragile. Back has been torn and repaired near neckline. Sleeve fabric very thin, cuffs frayed and one sleeve torn near lower gathers. There is black staning at lower front edge. Back of skirt has large yellowed splotches.
