| Description |
Basket; Pomo; round, twined; sedge with redbud designs in shape of triangles; 25 cm. diameter x 38 cm. high. (basket given to Telitha Jane Allen from Pomo living in Dry Creek in 1854 [family oral history])
A Pomo Twined Gift Basket of Exceptional Quality Dimensions: Diameter is 10 inches. Condition: Good with minor rim abrasions. Estimated Date of Origin: 1890.
Description: This globose shape was woven by a superior artist who created this near-perfect form. Large red triangles alternate with light-colored triangles, all perfectly sized in conjunction with the changing diameter of the rounded sides. The diagonally twined weft surface is unusually uniform and smooth. There are no living Pomo weavers with the capability to produce a basket of this quality. Details of the weave include weft materials that are redbud and sedge root. These are diagonally twined over a warp of peeled willow shoots. The basket start is crossed warps. 6-1-05 Healdsburg Museum Collection Benjamin Benson American Society of Appraisers |
