Western Eskimo Coiled Basket
Dimensions: Diameter is 9 inches. Condition: Good with darkening from age and wear. Estimated Date of Origin: 1910.
Description: Alaskan Eskimo in style, this basket is coiled of lyme grass with simple lineal patterns in red and black worsted wool yarn. The shape of the basket is almost spherical with curving sides that greatly enclose the opening. There was probably a lid, now missing. Coiling direction is to the left with an exterior work face and a foundation of a bundle of grass stems. |
