Pomo or Miwok Miniature Coiled Basket
Dimensions: At the rim the diameter is 4 inches. Condition: Good with darkening and a broken rim warp. Estimated Date of Origin: 1900. Description: This small hemispherical single-rod basket has simple check patterns on the upper sides in black-dyed bracken fern root. The museum tag identifies the piece as Miwok and there are some minor distinctions from most Pomo baskets. The details of the weave are one-rod coiling from a knot start and the weft coils are split-stitched, interlocking on the interior of the basket. Also the coil terminus has a back-stitch with a tucked running end, a trait not often seen in Pomo baskets but documented from Jackson and Ione Miwok baskets.* *Appraiser's personal records from Hearst Museum Collection, U.C. Berkeley. |
