Pomo Twined Basket of Exceptional Quality

Dimensions: 16 inches in diameter.
Condition: Excellent.
Estimated Date of Origin: 1900.

Description: This stunningly beautiful basket was part of the Meyer Collection. No Pomo weaver presently living can produce a basket as exquisitely made as this piece. It is a twined storage basket that has rounded sides that rise from a flat base to a rim of exposed warps. The sides are unusually decorated with more red color than is commonly seen in Pomo baskets. The designs consist of wide decorated bands that extend from the base to the rim. These are woven in redbud with white highlights in reversed redbud. The patterns are diamond shapes, rectangles, and lineal patterns.
Details of the weave include a sedge root background weft with the redbud design material and both are plain-twined over a foundation of willow shoots. The twining pitch direction is down and to the right. There are also external bands of lattice twining. The start is crossed warps.
