About Us: Our Mission

The mission of the Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society is to record the history of the Healdsburg area through the collection and preservation of historical materials; to actively foster the appreciation of local history of the Healdsburg area through educational programs, activities and historical research; and to provide finances for, and to support, operate and manage the Healdsburg Museum, Edwin Langhart, Founder.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

HM&HS has full and part-time staff, a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and volunteer association of 100 people. Through strong member support, HM&HS serves as a valued local resource actively encouraging an appreciation for our heritage through exhibits, publications, resource materials and public programs for all ages.

HISTORIC DISPLAYS

Temporary exhibitions feature local artifacts, paintings, photography, documents and ephemera. Items from the permanent collection, augmented by items on loan, are periodically rotated through exhibitions and displays. Audio tours offered in the Gallery present background information of items on display greatly enhancing the visitor experience.

UPCOMING 2011 EXHIBITIONS

PUBLICATIONS

The Museum publishes The Russian River Recorder, a scholarly quarterly magazine, and a monthly newsletter, the Review. The Healdsburg Tribune also features a Museum section prepared by our volunteers called "Flashbacks," offering photos and tidbits from past newspaper columns.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING

“Hands on History” focuses on young visitors by providing families, school groups, and youth organizations the opportunity to learn by doing. Experiential workshops, a self-guided history scavenger hunt, and sponsorship of an annual Family History Essay Contest engage youngsters in a variety of ways to stimulate their love for exploration and adventure. As an integral part of the educational fabric of Healdsburg, HM&HS complements and enriches curricula within public, private, alternative, and parochial schools.

OUTREACH AND ORAL HISTORY

The Museum partners with the Healdsburg Branch of the Sonoma County Library and the Sonoma County Wine Library to present speakers on historic topics several times a year. Both audio and video recordings of oral history keep community memories alive.

COMMUNITY EVENTS & INVOLVEMENT

We participate in many local public events. Partnerships with Healdsburg Senior Living, the Healdsburg Senior Center, the City of Healdbsurg, the Chamber of Commerce and non-profits present history outside of the Museum’s walls for people of all generations and cultures, local residents and visitors alike. Our annual “Historic Preservation Awards” recognize owners of well-maintained historic residences and commercial buildings.
