August 8: Rest in Peace

Rest in Peace: Victorian Mourning & Oak Mound Cemetery History

Speakers: Frances Schierenbeck and Jim Dreisback

In the Victorian age, death was surrounded by strict rituals and rites. Stopped clocks, covered mirrors, heavy black veils and jewelry woven from the deceased's hair were all part of the story. Fran Schierenbeck will take you on a tour of these rites.

Jim Dreisback will tell the history of Oak Mound, one of Sonoma County’s oldest cemeteries, from its establishment in 1859 through various owners and its renaissance in the last 10 years as the Museum, local service clubs and businessmen have worked to restore the old section and renovate the historic fountain.
